Should I or Shouldn’t I Go to the Funeral?

Many people wonder whether they should attend a funeral or not. Funerals allow family and friends to say their final goodbyes to the deceased person. Everyone associated with the decedent has some responsibility & right to be present there. Here are certain tips that can help you decide whether you should go or should not go to a funeral:

You should the attend the funeral if:

  • You are a family member or close friend
  • You are a very good friend of any of the grieving family members but weren’t acquainted with the person that has passed away
  • You don’t personally know the family but had a special relationship with the deceased person
  • The family has informed you about the death and have asked you to be present

You shouldn’t attend the funeral if:

  • Your presence there can cause family members & friends of the decedent any pain/discomfort.
  • You weren’t acquainted with either the deceased person or his/her family members
  • You live very far away from where the funeral is to be held and do not have the financial means to travel all the way there to attend the funeral. In this case, you can call the family members and offer your condolences.

If you are still in a quandary about whether you should or shouldn’t attend the funeral, just give a thought to how you would feel a couple of years down the line. Some people that skip the service end up regretting their decision at some point in the future. This is why it’s far better to attend the funeral, rather than regret it at a later date.
