The Importance of Writing a Eulogy

A eulogy is an expression of gratefulness and grief and a final goodbye in honor of a deceased person’s memory. It isn’t very easy to speak before all the people attending the service, especially since you haven’t had the time to come to terms with your loss. But eulogies offer comfort to family and friends, which is why they are so important. At Franklin H. Rainear, Jr., Affordable Funeral Service & Cremation, LLC, we encourage families to consider saying eulogies for their dear departed. Some pointers you can keep in view include:

1. Don’t rush through it

Writing a eulogy can’t be rushed. You need to take some quiet time away from all the hustle and bustle associated with a death in the family, to think about what you want to say. Focus on the interactions you have had with the person when he/she was alive and think about the things you want to share. It's important to get into the right mindset while writing a eulogy.

2. Keep the personal and memorable aspects in view

Rather than stating the successes and achievements of the decedent, shine the spotlight on the more personal aspects. The thoughts you share should have a more personal touch and you can talk about some special traits or habits that the person had.

Talk about their favorite music, quotes, movies, etc. These types of personal stories and anecdotes give the eulogy more meaning and depth.

3. Talk briefly about their achievements and career

You can talk briefly about the person’s career, education, and achievements. List things the person was especially proud of. For instance, if they worked very hard to achieve something, make a point to mention it. You can also speak of milestones such as professional successes, marriage, kids, and more
